How to add WhatsApp and Instagram to your Google Maps profile

Introduction

To add WhatsApp and Instagram to your Google Maps listing, open your verified Google Business Profile and select Edit profile, then Contact. Add WhatsApp under Chat with a click-to-chat URL. Add Instagram under Social profiles with your full profile URL. Both options are available only for eligible profiles in select regions.

A customer finds your business on Google Maps after your team has gone home. They want to check tomorrow's class availability, ask about late check-in, or reserve a table for six.

A phone number gives them one option. WhatsApp lets them start a conversation. Instagram gives them a closer look at your business before they decide.

WhatsApp and Instagram serve different purposes

WhatsApp helps customers ask questions and act. Instagram helps them see what your business is like.

What do you need before setup?

For a hotel, WhatsApp might answer a late check-in question while Instagram shows recent room and pool photos. For a Pilates studio, WhatsApp can help someone find an open class while Instagram shows the space, instructors, and class format.

The channels support different parts of the same decision.

You need a claimed and verified Google Business Profile, access to edit it, and active WhatsApp and Instagram accounts.

Prepare these items before opening your profile:

  • A Google account with owner or manager access
  • An active WhatsApp number
  • A WhatsApp click-to-chat URL
  • A public Instagram profile
  • Your complete Instagram profile URL

How do you create a WhatsApp click-to-chat URL?

Your Google Business Profile is the listing that appears on Google Search and Google Maps. You can manage it directly from either service when you're signed in with the correct Google account.

A WhatsApp click-to-chat URL opens a conversation with your business without asking the customer to save your number first.

A standard link follows this structure:

Use numbers only after wa.me/. The number must be in full international format, including country code, but without the plus. Also remove any spaces, parentheses, hyphens, or other additional formatting.

Before adding the URL to Google, open it in a private browser window. Confirm that it starts a conversation with the correct business account.

How do you add WhatsApp to your Google Business Profile?

Add WhatsApp from the Chat section of your Business Profile's contact settings.

According to Google Business Profile Help, the profile must be claimed and verified. The Chat option is available only in select regions.

  • Go to your Google Business Profile.
  • Select Edit profile.
  • Select Contact.
  • Next to Chat, select the edit icon.
  • Open the Chat dropdown and select WhatsApp.
  • Paste your WhatsApp click-to-chat URL into the URL field.
  • Select Save.

What if the WhatsApp option is missing?

Once Google approves the change, eligible customers can use the WhatsApp option from your profile on Search or Maps.

If you add both WhatsApp and text messaging, Google states that only the text messaging option will appear to customers. Choose the channel your team is prepared to monitor.

If you don't see Chat or WhatsApp, the feature may not be available for your profile, business category, or region.

First, confirm that your Business Profile is verified and that you're signed in as an owner or manager. If the profile is verified and the field still doesn't appear, there may be nothing to correct. Google is still limiting the feature to select regions.

Do not paste a WhatsApp URL into your business description. Google does not allow URLs in that field.

You can still place WhatsApp on your website, booking page, and other approved customer contact points while you wait for the Business Profile option.

How do you add Instagram to your Google Business Profile?

Add Instagram under Social profiles in the Contact section of your Business Profile.

Google allows one link per supported social platform. Your Instagram URL should use this format:

Follow these steps:

  • Go to your Google Business Profile.
  • Select Edit profile.
  • Select Contact.
  • Next to Social profiles, select the edit icon.
  • Select Instagram from the Social profile dropdown.
  • Enter your complete Instagram URL.
  • Select Save.

How do WhatsApp and Instagram help customers decide?

WhatsApp reduces the distance between a question and an answer. Instagram reduces uncertainty about what the customer will experience.

Imagine someone searching for a nearby gym before work. Google Maps confirms the location and hours. Instagram shows the equipment and class environment. WhatsApp answers whether a day pass is available.

The same pattern applies across customer-facing businesses:

  • A hotel can answer questions about parking, rates, and late arrival.
  • A restaurant can respond to questions about group reservations.
  • A Pilates studio can share class availability and membership details.
  • An entertainment venue can explain packages and confirm open time slots.
  • A property manager can answer questions about availability and payment.

FAQs

Can every business add WhatsApp to Google Maps? No. Google limits WhatsApp Chat to claimed and verified Business Profiles in select regions. The feature may not appear even if your profile is verified.

Does adding Instagram let customers message me inside Google Maps? No. The Instagram link opens your public Instagram profile. Customers can then view your content or contact you through Instagram.

Can I use the same WhatsApp link for several locations? Yes. Google allows different Business Profiles to use the same WhatsApp link. Consider whether a shared number can identify the correct location and route each customer accurately.

Can I add more than one Instagram account? You can add one link per social platform to each Business Profile. Choose the Instagram account that most accurately represents that location.

Why was my Instagram link rejected? Google may reject a link if it is broken, duplicated, incomplete, or formatted incorrectly. Use the full URL and confirm that the profile is public and active.

Does Google track clicks on my Instagram link? No. Google does not currently provide performance metrics for social profile link clicks.

Does WhatsApp replace my booking or payment link? No. WhatsApp starts the conversation. You can still keep a separate booking, appointment, or ordering link on your Business Profile when your business category supports it.

Key takeaways

WhatsApp and Instagram make your Google Business Profile more useful at the moment a customer is deciding what to do next.

WhatsApp creates a direct conversation. Instagram adds current visual context. Both features can reduce the steps between finding your business and contacting it, but neither guarantees a fast response on its own.

Visito can answer those messages, guide customers toward the right option, and help them complete the next step while your team focuses on the people already in front of them.
