How to set up Instagram auto replies in 2026

Instagram auto replies are free for any professional account, business or creator. In the Instagram app you can show up to four frequently asked questions with an automated answer for each. In Meta Business Suite, with an Instagram business account, you can set an instant reply to first messages, an away message, keyword replies and comment-to-message replies, and assign new chats to your team. And Meta Business Agent, Meta's AI agent for business messaging, can answer DMs from your website, catalog and posts, free to start in the markets where it is available.

Those built-in tools are enough when most questions have one fixed answer, or when an AI that knows your public content can handle them. An external AI agent is worth it when a reply needs data from your own systems, such as availability, a booking or an order, when your team also answers WhatsApp, Messenger and website chat, or when every conversation should update a CRM. Below are the steps for each option, the limits Meta sets, and 10 auto reply messages you can copy.

What are your options for Instagram auto replies?

There are four ways to send automated messages on Instagram. The first three are Meta's own and free to start. The fourth is a third-party tool that connects to your account through Meta's API.

What can you automate inside the Instagram app?

Every professional account gets frequently asked questions (FAQs) in Instagram's own messages. You choose up to four questions that people see when they start a chat with you, and you can give each one an automated response, so simple questions get an answer straight away. If you haven't set any, Instagram shows four suggested questions based on your account type, which you can replace or turn off.

There is one catch. When someone taps a question, their message goes to your message requests, and you have to accept the request before you can reply in person.

How to set up FAQs in the Instagram app

  • Open Messages, tap the menu icon and then Tools.
  • Tap Frequently asked questions and turn on the option to show questions.
  • Tap Add question, type the question and an optional automated response, then tap Save.
  • Repeat for up to four questions. You can edit or delete them at any time.

What are Instagram's AI auto replies?

Instagram's AI auto replies belong to creator AI, a separate product that creators build with Meta AI Studio. A creator AI learns from your Instagram and Threads content, plus facts, links and topics to avoid that you add. You can let it reply to anyone you don't follow, to followers you don't follow back, or only to people you choose. Its replies are labeled as coming from your AI, and it pauses while you reply yourself.

It is rolling out gradually, works only in the mobile app, and Meta notes that these AIs have only been trained in English. It suits a creator answering fans. For a business answering customers, Meta Business Agent is the closer fit.

Saved replies, the shortcuts you insert while typing a DM, still save time when you answer by hand, but they never send anything on their own.

How do you set up auto replies in Meta Business Suite?

Meta Business Suite is free and puts messages from Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp, plus comments on your Facebook and Instagram posts, in one inbox. Most of Instagram's auto reply tools live in its inbox automations. Connect your Instagram business account to Business Suite and allow access to Instagram messages before you start.

How to create an instant reply or away message

  • Go to Inbox in Meta Business Suite on desktop and click Automations.
  • Click Create automation in the top right.
  • Pick a template, such as Auto reply for someone's first message or Away message for when you're not available.
  • Write your message, choose Instagram as the channel and click Create automation. Turn it on or off with the toggle under Status.

The same list has templates for FAQs, location, contact information and hours, plus Identify unanswered messages and Assign admins, which assigns new conversations to people on your team. You can also start from scratch: choose a condition (a new message, a label added or a message assigned) and actions such as sending a message, adding labels or marking the chat.

How do keyword auto replies work?

Custom keyword automations reply when a message contains keywords or phrases you choose, up to five per automation, and the reply can include photos, videos, buttons and links. They are available on desktop only. Keywords are case-sensitive and must match exactly, so add the spellings people actually type. Business Suite waits 15 minutes before sending a keyword reply in case you answer first, and if a template automation such as your away message is triggered too, the template reply is the one that goes out.

What are the limits of Business Suite automations?

  • Replies are fixed text. They can't check stock, a booking or an order.
  • Meta says some organic messaging features are unavailable for businesses and messages in Europe and Japan.
  • Assignment, labels and private notes work for a small team, but Business Suite doesn't connect to your booking system, store or CRM.

How does comment-to-DM automation work on Instagram?

Comment-to-DM means someone comments a word such as “price” on your post or Reel and gets a private message with the answer or link. In Business Suite, the Comment to message template does this for comments that contain keywords or phrases you set. It answers with a private message, not a public reply under the post.

Third-party tools work within Meta's API rules. Meta's private replies documentation allows one private message per comment, sent within 7 days of the comment, and for Instagram Live only during the broadcast. The message lands in the person's inbox if they follow you and in their requests if they don't. You can send more only if they reply, and then within 24 hours of their reply.

So make the first message do the work: answer the question, include the link, and end with a question worth replying to, such as which date or size they need. If comment campaigns drive most of your Instagram sales, a dedicated comment-to-DM tool such as Manychat gives you more control over each campaign than the Business Suite template.

Can you send auto DMs to new followers on Instagram?

No. Meta's Instagram messaging API only lets a business message someone after that person has messaged it first, and Business Suite has no new-follower trigger. A welcome DM to every new follower is not something Meta's own tools or its API offer.

What works instead is giving people a reason to send the first message:

  • A comment keyword. Ask people to comment a word on a post or Reel, then send the answer as a private reply.
  • Story replies. End a Story with a question. A reply opens a conversation you can answer, automatically or by hand.
  • FAQs. Up to four questions on your chat screen make the first message one tap.
  • Ads that click to Instagram Direct. When someone messages you from one of these ads, Meta's window to reply can last up to 7 days instead of 24 hours.

What is Meta Business Agent and how does it work on Instagram?

Meta Business Agent is Meta's AI agent for business messaging, announced on June 3, 2026. It is the Meta AI product built to answer your customers. Meta says it can answer questions about your business, recommend products from your catalog, book appointments, qualify leads and close sales, and that you decide when someone from your team steps in. Meta also says more than one million businesses already use a Business Agent on WhatsApp and Messenger.

Don't confuse it with two other Meta products: creator AI, the auto replies for creators described above, and Meta AI for business, an assistant that analyzes your content and ads rather than answering customers.

How do you set up Meta Business Agent on Instagram?

  • Make sure your Instagram account is a professional account.
  • Open your Instagram inbox, then Tools, and add information about your business, products, services and FAQs.
  • Review the knowledge base. Meta says the agent reads your website, product catalog, and Instagram posts and Reels, and drafts FAQs, policies, pricing and product details for you to correct.
  • Test it privately. Ask the questions you get most and rewrite any reply you don't like.
  • Turn on AI responses. The agent then answers messages from your profile and your ads, and its conversations appear in your inbox with your other messages.

Meta's own tip is to spend ten minutes adding the five questions you get most, then coach the agent inline as real conversations come in. On its Business Agent page for Instagram, Meta also describes guardrails for what the agent answers, how it sounds, how quickly it follows up and when to step in. Meta says Business Agent replies in your customers' local languages, and its Business Agent Platform lists more than 50.

Where is it available and what does it cost?

Meta says Business Agent on Instagram is “available to eligible businesses in select markets,” with more markets coming, and that getting started is free. Meta has not published an Instagram price. In June it said businesses would access the agent through paid subscriptions in the coming months, and the Meta One business plans, from $14.99 to $499 a month per Page, profile or number where available, list Business Agent access under their WhatsApp features only.

On the WhatsApp Business Platform, Meta does publish a rate: $2 per million tokens, which it estimates at about 4 to 5 cents per message. If you start for free on Instagram, expect a price later and check it before your business depends on the agent.

What are its limits?

  • Turning it on pauses your Business Suite automations, such as away messages and instant replies.
  • It answers from what you've published. Connecting it to your own systems goes through the Business Agent Platform, which Meta positions for medium and large businesses that build with its APIs or a Meta partner.
  • It works inside Meta's apps. Your website chat and any other channel need a separate tool.
  • In Business Suite, an AI Responding label shows which chats the agent is handling, and you can reply manually at any time. Meta doesn't document routing rules or a ticket queue for the Instagram setup.

What is Instagram DM automation, and when are Meta's tools not enough?

Instagram DM automation is any setup that answers direct messages without a person typing each reply, from a fixed away message to an AI agent. Meta's tools cover a lot of it for free. Stick with them when:

  • Most questions have one right answer that rarely changes, such as hours, location, prices or policies.
  • Your answers are on your website or in your Meta catalog, and Meta Business Agent is available in your country.
  • Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp are your only channels, and Business Suite's inbox is enough for your team.

An external AI agent earns its cost when one of these is true:

  • Replies need your own data. Availability, a booking, an order status or a customer record lives in a booking system, store or CRM, and the agent has to read it, or write to it, during the chat. Meta's Business Agent Platform covers this for larger businesses that build on its APIs; smaller teams usually need a tool with ready-made integrations. Hotels feel this first, which is why Instagram DM automation for hotels depends on the PMS connection.
  • Conversations should update your CRM. The agent handles lead qualification in the chat, and leads, stages and details such as dates or budget are captured instead of copied by hand.
  • Work needs tracking. When something needs a person later, such as confirming a late checkout or a refund, it becomes a ticket with an owner and a status, not a chat someone has to remember.
  • You answer more than Instagram. One inbox holds Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger and website chat, so a customer who switches channels doesn't start over.
  • Chats need routing. Handoffs go to a specific person or team with the context attached, and follow-ups run on rules you set. Meta doesn't document either for its Instagram agent.

Tools in this space price very differently, from free tiers with low contact limits to per-contact plans for Instagram DM tools, so compare what each one charges as your volume grows. Before you pick one, decide what you want automated first with the help of Instagram AI agents for business.

How do you set up an external AI agent for Instagram?

The steps are much the same in every tool:

  • Use a professional account and connect it to the tool through Meta's login, which asks you to allow it to read and send messages.
  • Add your knowledge: your website, policies, prices, menus or room types, and the questions you answer every day.
  • Connect your systems if replies depend on live data. Check whether the tool has a native integration for yours, or can call any system with an API.
  • Set rules and handoffs: what the agent may answer, its tone, when it hands a chat to a person and who receives it.
  • Test it with your 20 most common questions, including the awkward ones, before you turn it on.
  • Turn off overlapping automations so a Meta away message and the agent don't both answer the same DM.

Visito is one of these tools, and we wrote this guide. Its Instagram AI agent learns from your website and documents, answers DMs and Story replies, and keeps Instagram in one shared inbox with WhatsApp, Messenger and website chat. It connects to booking systems, PMSs and stores through native integrations, and to other systems with an API.

Visito also keeps a CRM up to date from your conversations and turns follow-up work and escalations into tickets your team can assign and close. Conecta Glamping, an eco-retreat in Mexico with 140,000 Instagram followers, automated over 95% of guest messages with Visito. Visito doesn't run comment-to-DM campaigns, so if those drive your Instagram, a dedicated comment tool is the better fit for that part.

What auto reply messages can you copy for Instagram?

Edit these to sound like you, keep them short and replace anything in brackets.

  • Welcome (instant reply): “Hi! Thanks for messaging [Business]. This is our automated assistant. Tell us what you're looking for and we'll reply as soon as we can. For quick answers, tap one of the questions below.”
  • Away message: “Thanks for your message! We're away right now and back at [9 a.m.]. Leave your question here and we'll answer it first thing.”
  • Pricing question: “Our [service] starts at [price]. What date and how many people? I'll send you the exact price and what's included.”
  • Booking request: “Happy to help you book! Which dates are you thinking of, and for how many people? You can also book directly here: [link].”
  • Order status: “Sorry for the wait! Send us your order number and we'll check where it is. You can also track it here: [link].”
  • Comment to DM: “Hi [name], thanks for your comment! Here's the [guide, price list or link] you asked for: [link]. Want me to recommend the best option for you?”
  • Location and hours: “We're at [address], open [days] from [hours]. Here's the map: [link]. Anything else I can help with?”
  • Story reply: “Glad you liked it! The [product or offer] is available until [date]. Want me to save one for you?”
  • Lead capture: “Thanks for reaching out! So I can send the right options, what are you looking for, and when do you need it?”
  • Handoff to a person: “Good question. I'm passing this to [name] on our team, who will reply here within [time].”

What else do people ask about Instagram auto replies?

Are Instagram auto replies free?

Yes. FAQs in the Instagram app, Meta Business Suite automations and comment-to-message replies cost nothing. Meta Business Agent is free to start on Instagram, though Meta has said paid subscriptions are coming. Third-party tools charge their own fees. Check what a free tier includes before you build campaigns on it.

Can I set up auto replies on a personal Instagram account?

No. FAQs, inbox automations and Meta Business Agent all need a professional account, and Business Suite's automations need an Instagram business account connected to it. Switching to a professional account is free.

Can Instagram auto reply to comments?

Yes, with a private message. Business Suite's Comment to message template replies to comments that contain your keywords, and Meta allows one private reply per comment within 7 days.

Should I tell customers they're talking to an automated reply?

Where the law requires it, Meta's messaging API rules say automated chats must disclose that the person is talking to an automated service at the start of the conversation, after a long gap and when a chat moves from a person to automation. A line in your welcome message covers the start of each conversation, and the same line helps when a chat moves from your team back to automation.

Does Meta Business Agent reply in Spanish?

Meta says Business Agent replies in your customers' local languages, and its Business Agent Platform lists more than 50 languages. Creator AI, the auto replies for creators, has only been trained in English.

Can I use Meta Business Agent and another tool at the same time?

Meta doesn't document how the Instagram agent behaves alongside a third-party tool connected through the API, so test with one system answering at a time.

How can you try an AI agent on your Instagram?

Start with Meta's free tools. FAQs, an away message and a few keyword replies take an afternoon, and they show you which questions come up most. When answers start to depend on your own systems, or Instagram is one of several channels your team answers, try an AI agent on those same questions.

Visito's Starter plan, from $9 a month, includes Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger with automatic follow-ups and chat assignment. The Free plan lets you train and test the agent on website chat first, and you can compare plans on the Visito pricing page.
