12 best Twilio alternatives for WhatsApp in 2026

If you use Twilio for WhatsApp and you also need an AI agent, a team inbox and a way to hand chats to a person, start with Visito. The Visito API covers the core WhatsApp work teams use Twilio for: sending templates and replies with media, tracking delivery and receiving signed webhooks. The AI agent, inbox and CRM come with it. Starter is $49 a month, and Meta bills its message fees directly to your own WhatsApp account.

If you only want a cheaper pipe, look at the API providers. Going straight to Meta's Cloud API removes the provider fee, 360dialog charges a flat fee per number, and Gupshup charges a smaller fee per message than Twilio. If you're replacing all of Twilio, SMS and voice included, Infobip, Sinch, Vonage and Bird are the like-for-like options. For a team inbox you don't have to build, look at respond.io, Wati, YCloud and Treble.

Which Twilio alternative for WhatsApp should you shortlist?

Here are all twelve at a glance. Prices are in USD, and Meta's own message fees come on top of every option.

Why do teams look for a Twilio alternative for WhatsApp?

Twilio is a solid way to get WhatsApp into your own code. These are the reasons teams look elsewhere:

  • A fee on every message, both ways. Twilio charges $0.005 for each WhatsApp message, sent or received, on top of Meta's fees, and $0.001 for each message that fails.
  • Replies cost money now. Since October 1, 2026, Meta charges for service messages, the replies you send inside the 24-hour window, after 1,000 free ones per number each month. Past that, every reply carries Meta's charge plus the provider's fee. Our WhatsApp Business API pricing guide breaks down Meta's side.
  • You build the rest. Twilio gives you the API. The inbox your team works in, the AI agent, the handoff to a person and the CRM sync are yours to build, host and maintain.
  • Your app number has to give up the app. Twilio's setup guide says a number already on the WhatsApp Business app must delete that WhatsApp account before you register it. We didn't find coexistence, which keeps the app working on the same number, anywhere in Twilio's documentation as of October 2026.

Can you move your WhatsApp number away from Twilio?

Yes. Meta lets a WhatsApp number move from one provider to another. Twilio's own migration guide lists what travels with a number: its display name, messaging limit tier, quality rating, Official Business Account status and message templates. Templates are copied to the new account rather than moved.

Before you switch, check two things with the new provider: that your templates are approved on the new account before you send, and who will own the WhatsApp Business account in Meta afterward. If you're not sure which WhatsApp product you're on today, our comparison of WhatsApp, WhatsApp Business and the API sorts it out.

Why should you listen to us?

Visito builds AI agents that answer and sell on WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger and website chat, and we connect to the same WhatsApp Business Platform as every tool on this list.

Obvious caveat: we wrote this and we put ourselves first. Visito is first for one kind of team, one that wants the AI agent and the inbox, not just the API. If you need SMS, voice or email from the same vendor, or you only want the cheapest pipe, other tools here fit better, and we say which.

A real example: Hotel Singular automated 95% of its guest conversations with Visito and grew direct bookings by 30%, with more than 50x return in the first year. That's one customer's result, not a promise.

How did we compare these WhatsApp providers?

The twelve fall into three groups. Visito, respond.io, Wati, YCloud and Treble give you an inbox and automation on top of the API. Meta's Cloud API and 360dialog give you the API and little else. Infobip, Sinch, Vonage and Bird sell WhatsApp next to SMS, voice and other channels, the way Twilio does, and Gupshup pairs WhatsApp with voice and AI agents.

We read each vendor's own pricing pages, product pages and documentation in October 2026 and asked the same questions every time:

  • What you get. Only the API, or an inbox and AI agent as well?
  • How you pay. A fee per message, a flat fee per number or a subscription, always on top of Meta's message fees.
  • Your number. Can you bring an existing number, and can you keep the WhatsApp Business app on it?
  • AI. A built-in agent, or one you build and connect yourself?
  • Channels. WhatsApp only, or SMS, voice, email and social too?
  • Setup. Self-serve sign-up, or a sales call first?

How do the 12 Twilio alternatives compare?

Prices are in USD, before tax and before Meta's message fees. Where a vendor doesn't publish a price, we say so.

What do the provider fees look like at 20,000 messages a month?

Take one number that receives 10,000 customer messages and sends 10,000 replies in a month. Meta's own charges are the same whichever provider you pick, so this table shows only what the provider adds on top. On Twilio, that month costs $100 in provider fees: 20,000 messages at $0.005, sent or received.

ToolProvider fee for the monthHow it adds up
Visito$49 Starter planPlan fee; AI replies and follow-ups use credits, messages your system sends through the API do not
Gupshup$2020,000 messages at $0.001
360dialog$59One number on Regular, whatever the volume
Meta WhatsApp Cloud API$0No provider; you host and build everything

The break-even points follow from that. 360dialog's flat fee costs less than Twilio's fee from about 11,800 messages a month, and less than Gupshup's from about 59,000. Inbox platforms such as respond.io and Wati charge by contacts or plan instead, so compare them on your own contact numbers.

1. Visito: best for teams that want WhatsApp automated, not just connected

Visito API page with a code sample that sends a WhatsApp reply

Visito is an AI agent for WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger and website chat, with a team inbox, human handoff and a CRM built in. The agent answers from your website and documents, calls your own systems through actions and hands the chat to a person when it should. Ready-made integrations cover tools such as Shopify, Google Sheets and booking and property systems. Your team works every conversation from one dashboard.

The API is what makes it a Twilio replacement. It's REST and JSON with an OpenAPI definition. You can reply with text or media, start WhatsApp conversations with templates, submit new templates for Meta's review and follow each message from queued to read. Signed webhooks tell your system when a message arrives, a handoff changes or a CRM deal moves, and an MCP server lets Claude, ChatGPT and Codex work with the same data. Our walkthrough of a WhatsApp workflow built with the Visito API and Claude Code shows it end to end, and the API documentation has every endpoint.

Key features

  • AI agent that answers, calls your backend through actions and hands off to your team
  • One inbox for WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger and website chat
  • REST API, signed webhooks for seven events and an MCP server
  • Coexistence, so you can keep the WhatsApp Business app on your number

Pricing

Free covers website chat with 100 credits a month. Starter is $49 a month for 1,000 credits and adds WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, 5 users and the API. Pro starts at $399 and adds WhatsApp marketing campaigns and payments in the chat. Credits pay for automated work: AI replies, action calls and automatic follow-ups. Customer messages, replies your team writes and messages your own system sends through the API don't use them. Meta bills its message fees to the payment method on your own WhatsApp account, separately from your Visito plan.

Pros

  • The AI agent, inbox and handoff come with the API
  • Published prices and monthly billing
  • You see Meta's charges on your own Meta account

Cons

  • No SMS, voice or email
  • No official SDKs yet; you call the REST API directly
  • WhatsApp marketing campaigns need Pro

Best suited for: businesses that use Twilio for customer conversations, such as customer support or sales and bookings, and would rather not build the inbox and the AI themselves.

2. respond.io: best for teams working many channels from one inbox

respond.io homepage presenting its team inbox with AI agents

respond.io is a customer conversation platform. WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, email and calls land in one team inbox, with AI agents, workflows and broadcasts on top. It connects to HubSpot and Salesforce, and developers get an API, webhook events and an MCP server.

It's priced by monthly active contacts, the people you actually talk to in a month, rather than per message. It supports coexistence, so you can connect a WhatsApp Business app number and keep using the app. We compare the two products in Visito vs respond.io, and our list of respond.io alternatives covers the rest of the market.

Key features

  • Team inbox with lifecycle stages and contact profiles
  • AI agents, workflows and broadcasts
  • WhatsApp, Messenger and VoIP calls in the same thread as chats
  • HubSpot, Salesforce, Zapier, Make and n8n

Pricing

Starter is $99 a month on monthly billing, or $79 a month billed yearly. Growth is $199 a month, or $159 billed yearly, and Advanced is $349, or $279 billed yearly. Growth and Advanced start with 1,000 monthly active contacts, and Starter doesn't include AI agents. There's a free 7-day trial with no credit card.

Pros

  • Strong when customers switch between channels
  • Coexistence support
  • Developer API, webhooks and MCP

Cons

  • Costs rise with monthly active contacts
  • Extra users cost $12 to $24 a month each, depending on the plan
  • AI agents start on Growth

Best suited for: support and sales teams that handle several channels and want automation they set up themselves.

Wati homepage presenting its business messaging platform

Wati is a WhatsApp-first platform for small and mid-size businesses. You get a shared inbox, broadcast campaigns, click-to-WhatsApp ad tools, Shopify templates and a chatbot builder. It also handles Instagram, Facebook and TikTok messages and a website widget, and Astra, its AI builder, creates agents for WhatsApp, the web and voice.

Wati bills WhatsApp messages at its own rate card and shows local prices in some countries. It supports coexistence, which Wati support switches on for your account. Our Visito vs Wati comparison and our Wati alternatives list go deeper.

Key features

  • Shared team inbox with assignment
  • Broadcasts and click-to-WhatsApp ad tools

Pros

  • Deep campaign and ads tooling
  • Built for teams without developers
  • Coexistence support

Cons

  • Growth has no webhooks and a limit of 10,000 API calls a month
  • Message charges come on top of the plan
  • Prices vary by country

  • WhatsApp message charges come on top of the plan
  • Support on the lower plans runs weekdays, 9:30 to 18:30 UTC+8

Treble homepage inviting businesses to delight customers on WhatsApp

Treble is a WhatsApp platform for sales, marketing and support teams. You build automated flows with a drag-and-drop editor, transfer chats to live agents, and send segmented campaigns. Its AI answers common questions from a knowledge base, qualifies prospects and summarizes conversations.

Its strongest point is the CRM link. Treble integrates natively with HubSpot and Salesforce, captures each customer's questions and intent from the chat and feeds them to your CRM. An API connects it to your own systems or to Google Sheets.

Key features

  • Drag-and-drop chat flows with handoff to agents
  • Segmented WhatsApp campaigns
  • AI answers, lead qualification and chat summaries
  • Native HubSpot and Salesforce integrations

Pricing

6. Meta WhatsApp Cloud API: best for developers who want no provider fee

WhatsApp Business Platform page on the WhatsApp Business website

The Cloud API is Meta's own hosted WhatsApp Business API, the same one most providers on this list connect to. Going direct means no provider in the middle: you create a Meta developer app, register your number, receive webhooks on your own server and pay Meta's message rates and nothing else.

Meta charges per delivered message, by category and by the customer's country, and doesn't charge for messages customers send you. Each business number also gets 1,000 free service messages a month. Everything else is yours: hosting, retries, an inbox, the AI and support when something breaks.

Key features

  • Direct access to Meta's WhatsApp Business Platform
  • Templates, interactive messages, Flows and catalogs
  • Webhooks to your own endpoint
  • Meta's free entry point window for click-to-WhatsApp ads

Pricing

Meta's per-message rates only, by message category and country. There's no subscription and no provider fee.

360dialog homepage presenting its WhatsApp Business solutions

360dialog is a WhatsApp Business Solution Provider built for developers. You get direct API access, webhooks and documentation, with a flat monthly fee per number instead of a fee per message. 360dialog says it adds no markup on Meta fees.

It also supports coexistence, offers an MCP server so tools like Claude Code and Codex can manage WhatsApp accounts, and runs a marketplace that matches you with partner apps if you'd rather not build. It connects to Zapier, Make and n8n.

Key features

  • Direct WhatsApp API access with webhooks
  • Messaging MCP for AI coding tools
  • Coexistence and channel migration support
  • Zapier, Make and n8n integrations

Scale is $500 per number. 360dialog also lists the same plans in euros.

Pros

  • Predictable monthly cost per number
  • Month-to-month plans
  • Developer-friendly docs and MCP

Cons

  • The per-number fee applies even to quiet numbers
  • The inbox, campaign and automation add-ons start on Premium

Best suited for: developers sending enough messages that a per-message provider fee adds up.

8. Infobip: best for global brands on many channels

Infobip WhatsApp Business Platform page

Infobip is a large cloud communications platform and a Premier Meta Partner. WhatsApp sits next to SMS, voice, email, Viber and more, and you can use it through the API, a broadcast tool or AgentOS, Infobip's AI agent product.

On WhatsApp it covers Flows, in-chat payments, catalogs and voice and video calls inside WhatsApp, and WhatsApp can run as your main channel or as a failover for others. It supports coexistence, so a WhatsApp Business app number can join the API without leaving the app.

Key features

  • WhatsApp API with Flows, catalogs and payments
  • WhatsApp voice and video calling
  • AgentOS AI agents and chatbots
  • Failover between WhatsApp and other channels

Pricing

Per message, by message category and destination country. Infobip has a calculator on its pricing page, and large accounts go through sales.

Pros

  • Many channels under one contract
  • Premier Meta Partner
  • Coexistence support

Cons

  • Built for larger companies
  • The full price picture usually needs a sales call

Best suited for: global brands replacing Twilio across several channels at once.

9. Gupshup: best for per-message pricing at a low fee

Gupshup homepage presenting autonomous AI agents for customer conversations

Gupshup is a conversational messaging and AI company. Its AI agents handle sales, support and payments on WhatsApp and voice, and Superagent, its newest agent product, was in early access when we checked.

For anyone comparing it with Twilio, the fee is the headline: Gupshup charges $0.001 per message on top of Meta's fee, and large media files above 64KB add no extra Gupshup charge. It also supports coexistence.

Key features

  • WhatsApp API with low per-message pricing
  • AI agents for sales, support and payments
  • Voice AI agents on phone and WhatsApp
  • Partner program for software vendors

Pricing

Gupshup adds $0.001 per template or session message, and Meta's fees are billed at cost.

Pros

  • Low fee per message
  • AI agents and voice in the same platform
  • Built for large message volumes

Cons

  • Superagent, its newest agent product, is still in early access
  • Enterprise features and pricing go through sales

10. Sinch: best for enterprises that also send SMS and RCS

Sinch WhatsApp Business API page

Sinch is a cloud communications company that offers WhatsApp through its Conversation API, one API for WhatsApp, SMS, RCS and other channels. Sinch Engage adds a tool for campaigns and conversations, and Smart Conversations reads sentiment and text in images to help you reply.

Key features

  • Conversation API across WhatsApp, SMS and RCS
  • Sinch Engage for campaigns and conversations
  • Smart Conversations for sentiment and image text
  • Provisioning API for senders and templates

Pricing

Custom. Sinch doesn't publish WhatsApp rates on its pricing page; you can sign up for a free trial or talk to sales.

Pros

  • One API for many channels
  • Built for enterprise messaging on many channels
  • Email products from the same company

Cons

  • No public WhatsApp pricing
  • Coexistence isn't documented publicly

Best suited for: enterprises that send SMS, RCS and email at scale and want WhatsApp on the same contract.

11. Vonage: best for developers already on Vonage APIs

Vonage WhatsApp Business API page

Vonage, part of Ericsson, offers WhatsApp through its Messages API alongside SMS, MMS, RCS, Messenger, Viber and email. The WhatsApp features include end-to-end encrypted voice calls inside WhatsApp, location requests and SMS failover when a message isn't delivered.

Key features

  • Messages API for WhatsApp and six other channels
  • WhatsApp voice calling
  • SMS failover and delivery callbacks
  • Salesforce and MoEngage connectors

Pricing

Vonage charges a platform fee for each delivered WhatsApp message on top of Meta's charge, with rates by country. You can try it free.

  • SMS failover built in
  • WhatsApp voice calling

Cons

  • No inbox or AI agent out of the box
  • Coexistence isn't documented publicly

12. Bird: best for developers who want pay-as-you-go across channels

Bird homepage presenting communications for developers

Bird, formerly MessageBird, sells messaging APIs for email, SMS, WhatsApp, Apple Messages and voice. It's built for developers: code samples for Node.js, Python, Go and PHP, a sandbox for testing failures, idempotency and webhooks.

It also offers an MCP server and a command-line tool, so an AI agent can set up channels, manage contacts and check delivery.

Key features

  • WhatsApp API with pay-as-you-go billing
  • Code samples, sandbox and webhooks
  • MCP server and CLI
  • Email, SMS, Apple Messages and voice from the same account

Pricing

Pay as you go. Bird lists $0.005 per US marketing message plus Meta fees for WhatsApp, with rates by destination.

Pros

  • No monthly plan required
  • Strong developer tooling
  • Many channels in one account

Cons

  • A per-message fee, like Twilio
  • No inbox or AI agent for WhatsApp out of the box

Best suited for: developers who want Twilio-style pay-as-you-go billing with newer tooling.

Which other WhatsApp providers did we look at?

A few more come up when people search for Twilio alternatives. AiSensy and Interakt are popular WhatsApp marketing tools, especially in India. Kommo and Trengo are CRMs and inboxes with WhatsApp built in, and Zendesk adds WhatsApp to its help desk. Botmaker and Yalo build WhatsApp chatbots for larger companies in Latin America. Kapso is a newer WhatsApp API for developers, and Telnyx and 8x8, better known for SMS and voice, also sell WhatsApp.

We left out unofficial WhatsApp APIs, the tools that automate WhatsApp Web or the phone app instead of using Meta's platform. They break WhatsApp's terms, and the number can be banned without warning. Meta's rules for AI assistants on WhatsApp are worth reading before you pick any AI tool.

How do you choose the right Twilio alternative?

Start with what Twilio leaves you to build today:

  • You want an AI agent and an inbox, not just an API. Visito.
  • You handle many channels and want to set up automation yourself. respond.io.
  • Your WhatsApp work is mostly campaigns. Wati.
  • You want a free plan to start. YCloud.
  • Your sales team lives in HubSpot or Salesforce. Treble.
  • You want no provider fee and can build everything. Meta's Cloud API.
  • You want a flat fee per number. 360dialog.
  • You're replacing all of Twilio across channels. Infobip, Sinch, Vonage or Bird.
  • You want per-message pricing at a low fee. Gupshup. Past about 59,000 messages a month on one number, 360dialog's flat fee costs less.

Then ask every shortlisted vendor the same three things: what it adds on top of Meta's fee, whether you can bring your current number and keep the app, and who builds the inbox and the AI. If you're also weighing no-code automation for an AI agent, our list of n8n alternatives for WhatsApp AI agents covers that side.

What else do people ask about Twilio alternatives for WhatsApp?

How much does Twilio charge for WhatsApp?

Twilio charges $0.005 per WhatsApp message, sent or received, on top of Meta's fee for the message. Messages that fail cost $0.001 each.

What is the cheapest way to use the WhatsApp API?

Going direct to Meta's Cloud API, because you pay only Meta's rates. The trade-off is that you build and host everything yourself. Among providers, 360dialog charges a flat fee per number with no markup on Meta's fees, and Gupshup adds $0.001 per message.

Can I keep using the WhatsApp Business app after switching from Twilio?

Yes, with a provider that supports coexistence. Visito, respond.io, Wati, YCloud, 360dialog, Infobip and Gupshup document it. Some app features change once the number is connected: for example, you can't create new broadcast lists, and existing ones become read-only.

Do I need a developer to switch from Twilio?

Not always. Moving the number is a guided process with most providers. If you used Twilio to power your own app, your developers will need to point that code at the new API. If you used Twilio only because there was no inbox or AI, a platform like Visito replaces that custom work.

How can you try Visito with your own WhatsApp number?

Start on the free plan, train the agent on your website and test it in the playground with the questions your customers ask. When it answers well, connect your WhatsApp number on Starter, keep the app with coexistence if you want, and wire your systems in through the API.
